“Tootsie” will play its final Broadway performance on Jan. 5, 2020.
At that point, the musical will have played 293 regular and 25 preview performances at the Marquis Theatre. The closing announcement comes as “Tootsie” has been seeing middling grosses since the Tony Awards.
The musical had its best week, at $1.4 million, or 82% of its gross potential, in the week ended May 12. For the past few months, however, grosses have been hovering around 50% to 60% of the musical’s potential.
“Tootsie” had its lowest week at $717,535, in the week ended Nov. 3, a traditionally bad week for grosses within the industry. Last week, it brought in $943,764.
The production was capitalized for up to $19.98 million, according to documents filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission.
The musical won the 2019 Tony Award for Best Book of a Musical and Santino Fontana, who plays Michael Dorsey/Dorothy Michaels, took home the Tony Award for Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical, but it did not take home the prize for Best Musical.
The producers have previously announced a national tour launching in Buffalo, New York in October 2020. “Tootsie” also has plans for multiple international productions, including a West End production.
