The Olivier Awards are moving forward with a digital ceremony on Oct. 25 after postponing their April awards show.
The ceremony will be broadcast on television station ITV, as well as Magic Radio, and feature largely pre-taped content, including a small number of performances, awards presentations and interviews. The Tony Awards, originally scheduled for June 7, has also announced plans for a digital ceremony, but said Monday that there is not yet an announcement on timing or on the show’s broadcast partner.
The Broadway League had advised members on Aug. 21 that the ceremony would take place “late this fall,” but no specific date has yet been made public or shared with members at large.
The last update from the Tony Awards Administration Committee came on Aug. 28, at which time the committee made eligibility determinations on “My Name is Lucy Barton,” “A Soldier’s Play” and “Grand Horizons” and set a Feb. 19, 2020 cut-off date for eligibility. The committee did not provide updates on how some of the more sparse categories, including best score and leading actor in a musical, would be considered.
Given the low number of new productions that are anticipated to open in the 2020-2021 season, the Olivier Awards have also determined that the next ceremony will take place in April 2022.
