“Hillary and Clinton” will play its final performance on June 23, about one month ahead of its original closing date.
The play, starring Laurie Metcalf and John Lithgow, opened at Golden Theatre on April 18, 2019. The Lucas Hnath play received one Tony Award nomination, for Metcalf’s performance, but did not win and was struggling at the box office.
The play hit its highest gross in the week after its opening, reaching $493,352, or 61% of its gross potential. In recent weeks, grosses have been leveling off, with the play bringing in $291,098 in the week ended June 9.
At the time of its closing, it will have played 37 preview performances and 77 regular performances.
“Hillary and Clinton” was capitalized for up to $4.2 million, according to documents filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission.
This is the third show that producer Scott Rudin has announced an early closing date for in recent weeks. He previously announced the closings of “Gary” and “King Lear,” both limited runs that were struggling at the box office amid mixed reviews.
Rudin is also the lead producer of the still-running “To Kill a Mockingbird,” which is bringing in robust box office numbers.
