“Gary: A Sequel to Titus Andronicus” will close on June 16.
At that point, the play, written by Taylor Mac and directed by George C. Wolfe, will have played 45 preview performances and 65 regular performances. On Broadway, the play has struggled at the box office and received mixed reviews from critics.
In addition, the play did not take home any Tony Awards Sunday night, after being nominated for seven awards, including best play and for Julie White and Kristine Nielsen’s performances. It opened at the Booth Theatre on April 21 and was originally scheduled to close on Aug. 4.
The play, which also stars Nathan Lane, hit its highest gross in previews, in the week ended March 31, when it brought in $433,909, 49.3% of its gross potential. “Gary” had pushed back its first preview date and its opening night date, after original cast member Andrea Martin had to depart the production after breaking four ribs.
Grosses have been gradually declining since March, with the show bringing in $211,093, or 24% of its gross potential, in the week ended June 9.
