‘Chicago’ breaks house record again as overall box office slides

For the second time this month, "Chicago" has had its highest-grossing non-holiday week. In Jinkx Monsoon's final slate of performances as Matron "Mama" Morton, the production earned $926,363, up 2% from last week, surpassing its previous record of $913,161 for the week ending March 12.

For the second time this month, “Chicago” has had its highest-grossing non-holiday week. In Jinkx Monsoon’s final slate of performances as Matron “Mama” Morton, the production earned $926,363, up 2% from last week, surpassing its previous record of $913,161 for the week ending March 12. Capacity was up 1%, with the show playing to 100%.

For the week ending March 26, the 31 productions running grossed $32,656,200, down 4% from the previous week. Overall capacity fell 2% to 93%.

The three top-grossing productions were “The Phantom of the Opera,” “The Lion King” and “Hamilton.” Eighteen productions played to 95% capacity or greater, while four played to less than 80%.

“The Phantom of the Opera” earned more than $3 million for the second consecutive week. The musical earned $3,057,933, up 1%, and played to standing-room-only houses.

“Funny Girl” was again without star Lea Michele for five performances last week. However, the show saw a 30% box office increase compared to the previous week when Michele was out for all eight performances. The production earned $1,644,720 and played to 85% capacity, down 0.65%.

Through its first eight-performance week post-opening night, “Bob Fosse’s Dancin’” saw a 15% increase at the box office, grossing $646,944. Capacity, however, dipped 14%, with the musical revue playing to 78%-full houses.

Also in its first post-opening week was “Parade,” which saw an 8% box office increase. The production earned $1,127,073 and played to 100% capacity, down 2%.

“Fat Ham,” “The Thanksgiving Play” and “New York, New York” began previews last week. “Life of Pi,” “Shucked,” “Camelot” and “Peter Pan Goes Wrong” remained in previews. “Bad Cinderella” opened on March 23 and “Sweeney Todd” opened on March 26.
