“Suffs” will celebrate the 104th anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment, which gave women the right to vote, as well as Women’s Equality Day, with a weeklong series of special events and partnerships.

The honors will kick off during the musical’s Aug.18 matinée performance at the Music Box Theatre, where ticket holders will be invited to wear white in honor of the suffragists. Attendees will receive a sticker giveaway.

There will be an audience sing-along of the “Suffs” act-one anthem “The March” at the Aug. 20 evening performance, which will coincide with the previously announced Kids’ Night on Broadway event.

The Aug. 21 evening performance will be preceded by a gift card giveaway from the female-owned Talea Beer Co.

The Aug. 22 performance will include a post-show flower giveaway from Starbright Floral Design. Additionally, 19 theatergoers will receive a yellow rose upon arrival.

Local eatery Haswell Green’s will host a pre-show giveaway for drink tickets at the Aug. 23 performance.

“Suffs” will partner with the League of Women Voters (LVW) for the evening performance on Aug. 24, hosting a post-show talkback featuring LVW CEO Celina Stewart, historian Kimberly Hamlin and journalist Erin Geiger Smith.

Finally, additional off-site events will continue until Aug. 26, Women’s Equality Day. The Drama Book Shop will offer a display of suffrage-related books; select patrons will receive bookmarks signed by the cast of “Suffs.” Both P.S. Kitchen and the aforementioned Haswell Green’s will offer a “Suffs”-themed cocktail; patrons who order the specialty drinks will be entered into a giveaway for “Suffs” tickets. Gone to the Dogs will offer a “Suffs” display, ticket giveaway and a 19% discount in-store and online to anyone with a “Suffs” ticket stub.

“It is incredible that we get to celebrate this ratification anniversary with our audiences at the Music Box Theatre,” said producers Jill Furman and Rachel Sussman in a joint statement. “It is even more powerful to be doing it during the same week that the first woman of color is going to officially become the Democratic nominee for President of the United States. The suffragists, some of whom are depicted in our show, paved the way for all the powerful women in government that get to hold office today. It’s an honor to share their stories and encourage audience members who are inspired by their achievements to get out there and vote this fall.”

“Suffs” has released a video clip from the show featuring Tony nominee Emily Skinner performing “A Letter From Harry’s Mother.” Skinner plays Phoebe Burn, the mother of Tennessee senator Harry Burn. Phoebe’s real-life telegram to her son convinced him to reconsider his anti-suffragist opinions and vote to support the 19th Amendment. His vote allowed the 19th Amendment to be signed into law on Aug. 18, 1920.

Featuring a Tony-winning score and book by Shaina Taub, “Suffs” began previews on March 26 and opened on April 18. The production received six 2024 Tony Award nominations, including a nod for Best Musical.

“Suffs” is produced by Furman and Sussman. Hillary Rodham Clinton and Malala Yousafzai serve as co-producers.
