The week of holidays and school vacations moved the Broadway box office to its second-highest-grossing week of the current season. Some productions played an altered schedule, including “Aladdin” and “Wicked,” at nine performances each. The week ending Jan. 1, 2023, when productions on the Main Stem earned $51,912,226, remains the highest-grossing week this season.
For the week ending April 2, the 33 productions running grossed $38,594,054, a 12% increase from the previous week. Overall capacity was up 1% at 93%.
The three highest-grossing shows were “The Phantom of the Opera,” “The Lion King” and “Wicked.” Nineteen productions played to 95% capacity or greater, while three played to less than 70%.
“Moulin Rouge!” had its highest-grossing eight performance week in 2023, during what also happened to be the final week of performances for outgoing stars Aaron Tveit (back for a limited engagement) and Ashley Loren. The production grossed $1,801,019, up 16%, and played to standing-room-only crowds.
“Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” also had its highest-grossing eight-performance week of the year. The play earned $1,819,727, up 27%, and played to 100% capacity, up 8%.
In its first eight-performance week post-opening night, “Life of Pi” saw significant box office increases. The drama earned $634,701, up 27%, and played to 95% capacity, up 2%.
Also in its first post-opening week, “Shucked” saw the end of its preview pricing period. The new musical grossed $554,956, up 15%, and played to 95% capacity, down 2%.
“A Beautiful Noise” continues to struggle at the box office. Last week, the Neil Diamond jukebox musical earned $781,921, down 12%, and played to 67% capacity, down 6%. The production hasn’t played to greater than 80% capacity since February.
“Good Night, Oscar” and “Summer, 1976” began previews last week. “Fat Ham,” “The Thanksgiving Play,” “New York, New York,” “Camelot” and “Peter Pan Goes Wrong” remained in previews. “Shucked” opened at the Nederlander Theatre on April 4.
