Beginning on Jan. 19, Sonya Balsara will assume the role of Jasmine in the Disney musical “Aladdin.” Balsara will replace Shoba Narayan, who will play her final performance on Jan. 15.

Balsara played the leading princess last fall for several weeks, but this will mark her official Broadway debut in a full-time principal role. A graduate of New York University Tisch School of the Arts, Balsara most recently took part in the pre-Broadway lab of the “Karate Kid” musical.

The current cast of “Aladdin” also stars Michael Maliakel, who is making his Broadway debut in the title role, along with Michael James Scott as Genie and Dennis Stowe as Jafar. Rounding out the principal company are Milo Alosi as Kassim, Zach Bencal as Babkak, Brad Weinstock as Omar, JC Montgomery as Sultan and Don Darryl Rivera as Iago. Jeremy Gaston, Jared Wayne Gladly and Frank Viveros stand by for several principals. Casting is by Tara Rubin Casting.

“Aladdin” is produced by Disney Theatrical Productions, under the direction of Thomas Schumacher. Anne Quart serves as co-producer.
