New musical “Flying Over Sunset” will end its limited engagement about one month earlier than expected, Lincoln Center Theater announced Tuesday.
The musical, with book and direction by James Lapine, will end its run following its Jan. 16 matinee. It was previously scheduled to run though Feb. 6.
The production opened at the Vivian Beaumont Theater on Dec. 13. At the time of closing, it will have played 63 performances.
This is the first non-profit organization to close a production early this season. Several commercial productions have cut short their runs amid a rise in COVID-19 cases, both in the city and within fully vaccinated Broadway companies. “Thoughts of a Colored Man,” “Waitress” and “Jagged Little Pill” closed on Broadway during Christmas week. “Ain’t Too Proud” announced that it will play its final performance on Jan. 16.
Individual productions are not reporting grosses this season, so it is difficult to track a show’s financial position. However, the new musical, which takes a fictional look at Aldous Huxley Clare Boothe Luce and Cary Grant, received mixed to negative reviews from critics. Broadway News’ Charles Isherwood called the production “vibrantly imaginative.”
“Flying Over Sunset,” was originally scheduled to begin previews on March 12, 2020, but was unable to proceed due to the Broadway shutdown.
The production features Carmen Cusack, Kanisha Marie Feliciano, Harry Hadden-Paton, Nehal Joshi, Emily Pynenburg, Michele Ragusa, Robert Sella, Laura Shoop, Atticus Ware and Tony Yazbeck.
