“Pretty Woman” will play its final performance on Aug. 18, one year after the show opened on Broadway.

At the time of closing, the musical will have played 27 preview performances and 421 regular performances. It closes the same day as “The Cher Show” and “King Kong” and as many musicals end their runs after long periods of lackluster box office performance and a lack of Tony recognition.

The musical, which features a score by Bryan Adams and Jim Vallance, a book by Garry Marshall and J.F. Lawton and direction by Jerry Mitchell, started out its run with high grosses, regularly reaching $1 million a week and breaking the Nederlander Theatre’s box office record four times.

Since January, however, grosses have slumped, with the musical bringing in $538,553 in the week ended June 30, 2019, its lowest gross for an eight-show week.

The musical was capitalized for up to $17 million, according to documents filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

“Pretty Woman” is the seventh show to announce closing since the Tony Awards — though it did not receive any nominations.

The musical has an upcoming production in Hamburg in 2019 and a London production and a U.S. tour launching in 2020.

Jillian Mueller will take over the role of Vivian, currently played by Samantha Barks, and Brennin Hunt will take over the role of Edward, currently played by Andy Karl, beginning July 22 through the end of the run.
