“The Cher Show” will play its final show on Broadway on Aug. 18.

When it closes, the show will have played 34 preview and 296 regular performances at the Neil Simon Theatre. The closing notice comes after enthusiasm for Cher did not translate to Broadway ticket sales.

The musical, produced by Flody Suarez, Jeffrey Seller and Cher, announced a national tour launching in Rochester, New York in October 2020.

The show hit its highest gross in the holiday week ended Dec. 30, when it grossed $1.4 million. Since the beginning of the year, however, grosses have been underwhelming, with the musical pulling in $858,578, or 58% of its gross potential, in the most recent week.

The musical was capitalized for up to $19 million, according to a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

“The Cher Show” won two Tony Awards this season: Stephanie J. Block won for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role and Bob Mackie for Best Costume Design of a Musical.

“Watching audiences relive her empowering story through six decades worth of iconic songs, movies, costumes and relationships has been incredible,” Suarez said in the press release. “We look forward to taking this inspiring message on the road next year. We are incredibly thankful to this brilliant cast and crew.”

The musical, which features a book by Rick Elice and direction by Jason Moore, opened Dec. 3, 2018 at the Neil Simon Theatre.
