Incumbent Andrew Cuomo defeated Cynthia Nixon in the Democratic primary race for governor Thursday.

Cuomo was declared the victor late Thursday, bringing in 65% of the vote to Nixon’s 35%, with 80% of the precincts reporting, according to the New York Times.

Cuomo will now face Republican Marc Molinaro in the general election on Nov. 6, 2018. If Cuomo wins, he would serve a third term in office.

Nixon, a Tony-winning actor, announced her candidacy in March of this year.

A first-time candidate for political office, Nixon campaigned on progressive issues, focusing on education in public schools, single-payer healthcare and the legalization of marijuana, with a tentpole on fixing New York City’s subway system.

“While the result tonight wasn’t what we had hoped for, I’m not discouraged. I’m inspired. I hope you are too. We have fundamentally changed the political landscape in this state,” Nixon tweeted late Thursday.

Outside of politics, Nixon has been a regular fixture on Broadway, with two Tony Awards to her name, including for her role last season in “The Little Foxes.”
