Cynthia Nixon announced her run for governor of New York Monday.
After months of hinting at the move, Nixon officially announced her candidacy in a tweet Monday, stating “I love New York, and today I’m announcing my candidacy for governor.” Nixon will run against incumbent Gov. Cuomo in the Democratic primary.

As part of her announcement, Nixon released a two-minute video showing her wife and two children in their New York apartment and touting her status as a lifelong New Yorker, as well as a graduate of New York’s public schools — an area she feels needs improving today.
“I was given chances I just don’t see for most of New York’s kids today,” Nixon says in the video.
In the video, Nixon spoke to the issues of better healthcare, ending mass incarceration and “fixing our broken subway.”
“We are sick of politicians who care more about headlines and power than they do about us. It can’t just be business as usual anymore,” Nixon says.
Terry Gipson, a former state senator, has also said he will be running for governor, though has not made a formal announcement. Cuomo has held the position since Jan. 1, 2011 and will be seeking a third term.
Nixon, who has 13 Broadway credits, was on Broadway last season in “The Little Foxes” for which she won a Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Play. She previously won a Tony Award in 2006 for her role in “Rabbit Hole.”
