“1984” will now be considered for all Tony Awards categories after a nominator recused himself from the committee, the Tony Awards Administration Committee announced Thursday.
In its first meeting in November, the committee ruled that “1984” was not eligible for a Tony Award. After the ruling, the New York Times reported that Tony nominator Jose Antonio Vargas had not been invited to the play.
The new ruling came about after a series of determinations on seven Broadway shows, including that Tom Sturridge will be considered eligible for Best Performance by a Leading Actor in Play category for his role in “1984.”
Among the other determinations: Andrew Garfield will be considered eligible for a Tony Award for Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Play. Nathan Lane will be considered eligible for Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Play.
“Frozen” will be considered for Best Original Score.
Laurie Metcalf and Alison Pill will both be considered in the Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Play for their roles in “Three Tall Women.”
Both Caissie Levy and Patti Murin will be able to be considered in the category of Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role for their performances in “Frozen.“
The three choreographers of “Angels in America,” Finn Caldwell, Steven Hoggett and Robby Graham will all be considered jointly eligible in the Best Choreography category.
The shows considered included: “John Lithgow: Stories by Heart,” “Escape to Margaritaville, “Frozen,” “Angels in America,” “Lobby Hero,” “Edward Albee’s Three Tall Women” and “1984.”
The committee will meet one more time before the nominees are announced.
