In its first meeting of the season, The Tonys Committee decided that ‘1984’ would not be eligible for a Tony Award.

‘1984,’ originally written by George Orwell and adapted by Robert Icke and Duncan Macmillan, played 125 performances on Broadway this season and 38 previews.

The show, which starred Olivia Wilde, Tom Sturridge and Reed Birney, opened on May 18, 2017.

The dystopian play, directed by Robert Icke and Duncan Macmillan, made headlines this summer for audience reactions to violent depictions on stage.

The deadline for shows to be considered for this year’s Tony Awards is April 26, 2018. The awards show is slated for June 10, 2018 at Radio City Music Hall.
