Screen projects and stars with Broadway origins were among those honored at the 82nd annual Golden Globe Awards. The event, held on Jan. 5 at California’s Beverly Hilton, was hosted by comedian and actor Nikki Glaser. The Golden Globes, voted upon by entertainment journalists representing 85 countries, were broadcast live on CBS and Paramount Plus.
Among the night’s winners was the big-screen adaptation of the Broadway musical “Wicked.” The double feature’s first part, which arrived in cinemas on Nov. 22, was named winner of the award for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement. This award marked the evening’s only win for the Oz-themed movie musical, which also received nominations for Cynthia Erivo as Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy (which ultimately went to Demi Moore for “The Substance”) and Ariana Grande as Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role in any Motion Picture (going to Zoe Saldaña for “Emilia Pérez,” an original movie musical); “Wicked” was also nominated for Best Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy (that award went to “The Substance”).
Also on the Broadway front was a Golden Globe win for Kieran Culkin, honored as Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role in any Motion Picture, for his turn in the film “A Real Pain.” Culkin, who was first seen on Broadway in a 2014 revival of “This Is Our Youth,” is slated to return to the Main Stem this spring as Richard Roma in “Glengarry Glen Ross.”
Small-screen veteran and Broadway alum Jean Smart, a 2001 Tony Award nominee for her performance in “The Man Who Came to Dinner,” took home a 2025 Golden Globe as Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for “Hacks,” which was also named this year’s winner as Best Television Series, Musical or Comedy.
Sebastian Stan, whose Broadway credits include a 2007 staging of “Talk Radio” and the 2013 revival of “Picnic,” was named winner of the 2025 Golden Globe as Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy, for “A Different Man.” Stan was also nominated this year for his turn in “The Apprentice,” as Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Motion Picture, Drama, an award which ultimately went to Adrien Brody for “The Brutalist.”
