A still from Maria Friedman on PBS News Hour

Maria Friedman, helmer of the “Merrily We Roll Along” revival, recently appeared on PBS News Hour as part of the organization’s arts and culture series “CANVAS” to discuss the musical’s legacy, as well as having worked with the show’s legendary composer and lyricist, the late Stephen Sondheim.

Featuring a book by George Furth adapted from a 1934 play by George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart, “Merrily” chronicles the joys and frustrations of friendship as it intersects with the creative process. The first main Stem revival of the 1981 musical opened on Oct. 10, 2023, at the Hudson Theatre. The twice-extended production will complete its limited run on July 7. The production is nominated for seven 2024 Tony Awards, including nods of Best Revival of a Musical and for Friedman’s direction. The production recouped its $12 million investment in March.
