Broadway’s “Hamilton” has announced a new Alexander Hamilton.. Trey Curtis will step into the titular role on Jan. 9 at Broadway’s Richard Rodgers Theatre. He succeeds longtime cast member Miguel Cervantes, who will play his final performance in the role on Jan. 7.

Cervantes first joined the Broadway company on March 4, 2020, and returned with the reopening of “Hamilton” in September of 2021 after the pandemic shutdown. He previously played Alexander Hamilton for the full run of the sit-down engagement in Chicago, which began in 2016 and closed in 2020.

Curtis has performed in various companies of “Hamilton.” In January 2019, he was part of the company that played at the University of San Juan in Puerto Rico, an engagement which preceded the launch of a national tour, dubbed the “And Peggy” tour. Curtis then joined the “Eliza” touring company when it opened at Los Angeles’ Pantages Theatre in 2021. He then made his Main Stem debut in the musical’s Broadway production on Jan. 24, 2023, as an ensemblist and understudy for multiple principal roles, including Alexander Hamilton.

Internationally, Curtis has appeared in companies of “Hamilton” in Toronto, Melbourne and Manila. Across these companies, Curtis has played the roles of Philip Schuyler, James Reynolds and Doctor, in addition to understudying multiple roles, including Alexander Hamilton.

“Joining on Broadway feels serendipitous after my incredible journey with the show,” Curtis explained in a statement. “Hamilton is a magical role for me as a musician. If I can make just one person feel the way I felt after watching Lin-Manuel [Miranda] freestyle his Tony acceptance speech, then by God I’ve done a better job than I could’ve ever imagined.”

The winner of both the 2016 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the Tony Award for Best Musical, “Hamilton” features a Tony-winning book, music and lyrics by Lin-Manuel Miranda. Inspired by Ron Chernow’s 2004 biography of the first secretary of the treasury, the musical is directed by Thomas Kail.

“Hamilton” is produced by Jeffrey Seller, Sander Jacobs, Jill Furman and the Public Theater.
