Jake Gyllenhaal, Idina Menzel and Lin-Manuel Miranda will appear in a televised Broadway special this Sunday, as part of this year’s revamped Tony Awards celebration.
The Tony Awards are scheduled to take place at the Winter Garden Theatre this Sunday, in a two-part event that includes an awards presentation and a concert of Broadway stars and Tony Award nominees. A viewing party, complete with live entertainment and hosts, had been planned for the Broadway Theatre, but that event is no longer taking place, according to a spokesperson for the Tony Awards.
The Tony Awards had also planned an outdoor party after the ceremony. Attendees were informed Wednesday that the party will not take place because the city would not grant a permit.
The Tony Awards broadcast Sunday will include the 7 p.m. presentation of select awards streaming on Paramount+ and hosted by Audra McDonald. At 9 p.m., CBS will broadcast a special ushering in the return of Broadway and featuring performances by the casts of the Tony-nominated musicals, “Jagged Little Pill,” “Moulin Rouge! The Musical” and “Tina.” The special, hosted by Leslie Odom, Jr., will feature a presentation of the Tony Awards for Best Play, Best Revival of a Play and Best Musical.
Annaleigh Ashford, Kerry Butler, Kristin Chenoweth, André De Shields, Christopher Jackson, McDonald, Ruthie Ann Miles, Bebe Neuwirth, Kelli O’Hara, Ben Platt, Jeremy Pope, Chita Rivera, Daphne Rubin-Vega and BD Wong are also scheduled to appear.
