“The Great Gatsby” has announced a Broadway run. The musical adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s 1925 novel of the same name will begin previews on March 29 at the Broadway Theatre ahead of an April 25 opening night. Tony Award nominees Jeremy Jordan and Eva Noblezada will reprise their roles of Jay Gatsby and Daisy Buchanan, respectively.
Marc Bruni will direct the new musical which features a book by Kait Kerrigan. Music and lyrics are by Jason Howland and Nathan Tysen, respectively, the duo who shared a 2022 Tony nomination for their collaboration on the score of “Paradise Square.” Howland will also serve as music supervisor and arranger. He will provide orchestrations with Kim Scharnberg. Daniel Edmonds will music-direct. Dominique Kelley will serve as choreographer.
The production played Paper Mill Playhouse in Millburn, New Jersey from October to November 2023. Paper Mill, the recipient of the 2016 Regional Theatre Tony Award, has seen several of its productions enjoy a Broadway run, including “Newsies,” “Honeymoon in Vegas,” “A Bronx Tale the Musical” and “Bandstand.”
A Tony nominee for his turn as Jack Kelly in 2012’s “Newsies,” Jordan made his Broadway debut in 2009’s “Rock of Ages,” and subsequently appeared as Tony in the 2009 “West Side Story” revival and Clyde Barrow in 2011’s “Bonnie and Clyde.” A 2019 tenure as Dr. Pomatter in “Waitress” marks his most recent Broadway appearance.
A 2013 Jimmy Awards finalist, Noblezada began her career in London’s West End, performing as Kim in “Miss Saigon” and Éponine in “Les Misérables.” Noblezada repeated her “Miss Saigon” performance on Broadway in 2017, earning a Tony nomination. She received a second Tony nomination for playing Eurydice in 2019’s “Hadestown.”
Set in the affluent neighboring Long Island towns of East and West Egg during the early 1920s, “Gatsby” chronicles enigmatic millionaire Jay Gatsby’s obsessive quest to reunite with former lover Daisy Buchanan.
The production will feature scenic and projection design by Paul Tate DePoo III, costume design by Tony winner Linda Cho, lighting design by Cory Pattak, sound design by Tony winner Brian Ronan, and hair and wig design by Charles G. LaPointe and Rachael Geier.
Additional casting (by C12 Casting) will be announced at a later time.
Brian Bogin will be the production stage manager. Mark Shacket of Foresight Theatrical will serve as executive producer.
In addition to being a mainstay in school room curricula, Fitzgerald’s novel has inspired numerous stage and screen adaptations. Pulitzer Prize winner Owen Davis penned an adaptation that played Broadway in 1926; a film version of Davis’ play came out the same year. Additional motion picture adaptations of the property came in 1949, 1974 and 2013. The work entered the public domain in 2021, meaning it can be adapted or reproduced without the obligation of royalties and permissions. While this Paper Mill production will open on Broadway in April, a separate version will play American Repertory Theatre in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in May.
