Actor Marin Mazzie passed away Thursday morning at the age of 57, her publicist Kim Correro confirmed.
Mazzie, who had been battling Stage IV ovarian cancer since May of 2015, passed away peacefully in her apartment, surrounded by her husband, Jason Danieley, and close friends and family, her publicist said.
Mazzie had 11 Broadway credits to her name, including originating roles in Stephen Sondheim’s “Passion” and the Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flarherty “Ragtime.” Her most recent Broadway role was as a replacement for Anna Leonowens in the 2016 “The King and I.”
She made her Broadway debut in the 1985 “Big River” as a replacement for Mary Jane Wilkes. Mazzie received three Tony nominations throughout her career, for her roles in “Ragtime” and “Passion” as well as her starring role in the 2000 revival of “Kiss Me, Kate.”
Mazzie would often appear with her husband in concert, and also starred opposite Danieley as they replaced the lead roles in “Next to Normal” on Broadway.
During her battle with the disease, Mazzie worked to spread awareness of ovarian cancer and work toward finding a method of early detection, which does not currently exist.
She is survived by her mother, Donna Mazzie, brother, Mark Mazzie and her husband.
There will be a private gathering in the near future and a larger Celebration of Life at a later date.
