TheatreWorks Silicon Valley will receive the 2019 Regional Theatre Tony Award.
The Equity/LORT theater was founded in 1970 and produces eight shows annually, in addition to workshopping and developing new musical and plays. The theater has presented 69 world premieres, including the Tony Award-winning musical “Memphis.”
The goal of the theater, with locations in Palo Alto and Mountain View, is to create pieces “that celebrate the human spirit, and reflect the diversity of its community.”
“We are thrilled to present the 2019 Regional Theatre Tony Award to TheatreWorks Silicon Valley,” said Charlotte St. Martin, president of The Broadway League and Heather Hitchens, president of the American Theatre Wing, in a press release. “The work they produce celebrates the human spirit, they have helped develop hundreds of vibrant new plays and musicals that are now being performed in theaters across America, and they have pioneered education programs that inspire thousands of students each year, creating future generations of creative artists and enthusiastic audiences.”
It is the 50th anniversary season for the TheatreWorks Silicon Valley, which was founded by artistic director Robert Kelley. This will be his 50th and final season with the company.
“I can think of no better way to begin TheatreWorks’s 50th Anniversary Season than with this highest honor, a testament to the passion and imaginative spirit of the artists whose work has been presented on TheatreWorks’s stages,” Kelley said in the press release
