“The Prom” is moving to the Longacre Theatre, rather than the previously announced Cort Theatre.
The performance dates will remain the same, with the show beginning previews on Oct. 23, 2018 and an opening night set for Nov. 15, 2018. “A Bronx Tale,” which currently occupies the Longacre, recently announced it will end its run there on Aug.5.
The musical is produced by Dori Berinstein, Bill Damaschke and Jack Lane.
Berinstein said the Longacre Theatre had always been on the team’s short list of theaters, and knowing that, the Shubert Organization offered to move “The Prom” after “A Bronx Tale” announced its closing.
The Longacre Theatre and the Cort Theatre have similar configurations and seat counts, at just under 1,100, but the Longacre’s backstage area offers more flexibility for the show’s creative team, Berinstein said.
“It makes it, just operationally, a slightly better experience for the show,” Berinstein said.
The show was in the design phases for the front-of-house art and the marquee, but had not yet put it up at the Cort Theatre. If they had, Berinstein said the show may not have made the move.
“The Prom” is directed and choreographed by Casey Nicholaw, with a book by Bob Martin and Chad Beguelin, music by Matthew Sklar and lyrics by Chad Beguelin.
