Playwright Robert Schenkkan is returning to Broadway with “The Great Society,” a sequel to his previous play about former president Lyndon B. Johnson.
Directed by Bill Rauch, the artistic director of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival and Schenkkan’s previous play, “All the Way,” the production will play the Vivian Beaumont Theater at Lincoln Center beginning Sept. 6. It is slated for a 12-week limited engagement.
This is a companion piece to Schenkkan’s previous play, “All the Way,” which won the 2014 Tony Award for Best Play, with Bryan Cranston winning a Tony Award for his portrayal of Lyndon B. Johnson. Schenkkan is a Pulitzer Prize winner for his play “The Kentucky Cycle.”
“The Great Society” comes to Broadway after having played the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, Seattle Rep and Arena Stage.
The cast will include Brian Cox as Lyndon B. Johnson, Marc Kudisch as Richard J. Daley, Grantham Coleman as Martin Luther King Jr. and Richard Thomas as Hubert Humphrey.
The play is produced by Jeffrey Richards, Louise Gund, Rebecca Gold, Stephanie P. McClelland, Jayne Baron Sherman, Jacob Soroken Porter and Lincoln Center Theater.
The design team includes set designer David Korins, costume designer Linda Cho, lighting designer David Weiner, sound designer and composer Paul James Prendergast and projection designer Victoria Sagady.
