Nominations have been announced for the 2025 Make-Up Artists and Hair Stylists Guild Awards (MUAHS). As previously reported, the awards body, which honors achievement in make-up and hair design, will include Broadway productions for the first time this year. Designers of both disciplines are jointly recognized in a single category, Broadway and International: Best Make-Up and Hair Styling.
The inaugural slate of nominees include J. Jared Janas, Anthony Lauro, Sara Donovan and Ni’Kia McDaniel for Broadway’s “& Juliet”; Jamie Amadio, Brian Strumwasser, Erick Miralles and Antoinette Massiah for “Cabaret”; Barry Enst for “Chicago”; and Kevin Thomas Garcia, Christine Hutcheson, Michael Duschl and Britt Griffith for “The Great Gatsby.” Additionally, Sam Cox and Guy Common were acknowledged in this category for their work on the London production of “Cabaret.”
The Jon M. Chu-directed film adaptation of Broadway’s “Wicked” earned two nominations.
Frances Hannon, Alice Jones, Nuria Mbornio, Johanna Nielsen and Branka Vorkapic received a nod for Best Period and/or Character Make-Up, while Frances Hannon, Sarah Nuth, Sim Camps and Gabor Kerekes were nominated for Best Contemporary Hair Styling.
In order to be eligible for the MUAHS, productions must be playing during a specified time period (Jan. 1 through Dec. 31, 2024). This allows long-running productions (such as the aforementioned “Chicago” and “& Juliet” to be eligible), unlike the Tony Awards or other citations that celebrate Broadway, where a show must open within a certain timeframe.
The MUAHS are presented by Local 706, the union representing California hair and makeup artisans under the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE). The New York City chapter is Local 798.
Awards for the 12th annual MUAHS ceremony will take place on Feb. 15, 2025 at the Fairmont Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles.
