“The Book of Mormon” is reaching a new watershed moment. With the matinée performance on Feb. 22, the Tony Award-winning musical will play its 5,124th performance, surpassing “Rent” as the 11th-longest-running show in Broadway history.
To celebrate this milestone, the “Book of Mormon” company filmed a video which features reminiscences from current cast members Jacques C. Smith and John Eric Parker, both of whom made their Broadway debuts in “Rent.”
The Broadway production of “The Book of Mormon” also recently celebrated its 5,000th performance and is now the longest-running show in the 100-year history of the Eugene O’Neill Theatre.
Featuring a book, music and lyrics by Trey Parker, Robert Lopez and Matt Stone, “The Book of Mormon” follows a pair of Mormon missionaries as they journey to Africa. The musical is choreographed by Casey Nicholaw and directed by Nicholaw and Parker, with music direction by Stephen Oremus.
“The Book of Mormon” began previews on Feb. 24, 2011, and officially opened on March 24. The show went on to win nine 2011 Tony Awards, including prizes for Parker, Lopez and Stone’s book and score, Nicholaw and Parker’s direction, Oremus and Larry Hochman’s orchestrations, as well as the top prize of Best Musical.
