Just as “Stranger Things: The First Shadow” begins its Broadway bow, the production has announced a documentary about its journey to the stage. Titled “Behind the Curtain: ‘Stranger Things: The First Shadow,’” the film will be released on Netflix on April 15, one week before the play’s April 22 opening night at the Marquis Theatre. Previews of the play begin on March 28.

“Stranger Things: The First Shadow,” a prequel to the Netflix television series, premiered in London’s West End on Nov. 17, 2023, and officially opened on Dec. 14 at the Phoenix Theatre, where it continues to run. The TV series, created by the Duffer Brothers — identical twins Matt and Ross — debuted on July 15, 2016. Its fifth and final season comes out this year.

The play, written by Kate Trefry (a writer and executive producer of the series) and based on an original story by the Duffer Brothers, Jack Thorne and Trefry, follows the young inhabitants of the fictional town of Hawkins, Indiana, as the arrival of a new student turns their world upside down. The play is directed by Stephen Daldry and co-directed by Justin Martin, with musical supervision by D.J. Walde and technical direction by Gary Beestone.

The play’s cast is led by Louis McCartney as Henry Creel; McCartney is joined by T.R. Knight, Gabrielle Nevaeh, Alex Breaux, Rosie Benton, Juan Carlos, Andrew Hovelson, Alison Jaye, Burke Swanson, Ta’Rea Campbell, Robert T. Cunningham, Ayana Cymone, Ian Dolley, Dora Dolphin, Logan Gould, Shea Grant, Ted Koch, Jamie Martin Mann and Eric Wiegand.
