Ahead of its Jan. 12 final performance on the Main Stem, “Stereophonic” has announced plans for the play’s life post-Broadway. The 2024 Best Play Tony Award winner, written by David Adjmi, will receive a West End transfer, with performances set to begin in May at London’s Duke of York’s Theatre. Additionally, the play has scheduled a national tour, launching in October at Seattle’s Paramount Theatre.
The West End mounting will be produced by Sonia Friedman Productions, Sue Wagner, John Johnson, Seaview, Linden Productions and Ashley Melone and Nick Mills, while “Stereophonic”’s tour will be produced by Wagner, Johnson, Seaview, Sonia Friedman Productions, Linden Productions, and Melone and Mills.
Producers for “Stereophonic” have also revealed the production has recently recouped its original investment.
Finally, Concord Theatricals has acquired the exclusive, worldwide licensing rights to the play. “Stereophonic” will be available for licensing through Samuel French, an imprint of Concord. Licensing availability will be announced.
Featuring Tony-winning direction by Daniel Aukin and Tony-nominated original music by Will Butler, “Stereophonic” chronicles the creative process of a 1970s rock group as they record their sophomore album amid personal and professional challenges.
Following a fall 2023 Off-Broadway mounting at Playwrights Horizons, “Stereophonic” began Broadway previews on April 2, 2024 and opened on April 19 at the John Golden Theatre. Originally announced as a limited engagement through July 7, the play was first extended through Aug. 18, then through Jan. 5, 2025 and finally through Jan. 12. The production received 13 Tony nominations (a record for a straight play), winning five. An original cast album was released in May.
Casting, dates and additional cities for the national tour will be announced at a later date.
Stereophonic is produced on Broadway by Wagner, Johnson, Seaview, Sonia Friedman Productions, Linden Productions, and Melone and Mills.
