Tony Award winner Sonia Friedman has joined the producing team of the upcoming Broadway musical “The Queen of Versailles.” Friedman will serve as a producer and a general partner for the Kristin Chenoweth starrer, which follows the rise and fall of Orlando billionaires Jackie and David Siegel. As previously reported, “The Queen of Versailles” will land on Broadway during the 2025-2026 season. Friedman joins a producing team which includes Bill Damaschke, Greg Nobile and Chenoweth.
Friedman has been a producer on at least one show (often more) every Broadway season for the last two decades, including “The Book of Mormon,” “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child,” “The Ferryman” and “Leopoldstadt.” Friedman has won Tony Awards in all four of the best show categories, and most recently took home a pair of 2024 Tony Awards for producing Best Play winner “Stereophonic” and Best Revival of a Musical winner “Merrily We Roll Along.” Additionally, British-born Friedman has won multiple Olivier Awards for her West End producing efforts. Friedman is currently represented on Broadway with multiple titles, including “All In: Comedy About Love,” the recently closed “Hills of California,” the upcoming “Stranger Things: The First Shadow” and “Dead Outlaw.”
“I am thrilled to be joining Bill Damaschke, Greg Nobile and Kristin Chenoweth on the producing team of ‘The Queen of Versailles,’” Friedman said in a statement. “I completely adore this original, new musical. The Siegels’ story speaks to something fundamental about our world — about wealth and want, of course, but also about family, fragility, and, crucially, the need to love and to be loved. It’s a cautionary tale, a warning against hubris, but it’s also deeply and irresistibly human.”
Featuring a score by Stephen Schwartz and a book by Lindsey Ferrentino, “The Queen of Versailles” played a world premiere bow at Boston’s Emerson Colonial theatre in summer 2024. Michael Arden will return as director for the Main Stem mounting.
“It’s not only a musical that’s glorious, hilarious and full of great songs and performances, but one with so much heart, depth and humanity,” added Friedman. “Kristin Chenoweth is utterly captivating as Jackie Siegel, brilliantly blending humor and vulnerability with her extraordinary vocals and comedic skills in a performance for the ages. It’s an honor to join Stephen Schwartz, Lindsey Ferrentino, Michael Arden and the entire team and play a part in the next stage of this musical’s story.”
