Second Stage Theater has announced the lineup for New Voices, a series of readings to support early-career writers. New Voices will include the 2023 Judith Champion Reading Series for playwrights and the first-ever Nancy Denovan Musical Reading for musical theater writers.
The nonprofit, which produces Broadway and Off-Broadway theater, will host the one-night-only readings on Monday evenings in April and May. All readings will take place at the Tony Kiser Theater.
The New Voices series will begin on April 24 with “The Apiary” by Kate Douglas and directed by Kate Whoriskey. “The Woods” by Jahna Ferron-Smith will take place on May 1. “Chinese Republicans” by Alex Lin and directed by Chay Yew will be held on May 22.
The Nancy Denovan Musical Reading will present “Britton & The Sting,” created by Broadway alum Britton Smith, on May 15.
Tickets are available for Second Stage’s members and subscribers and will open to the public on April 6.
“Supporting writers at the beginning of their careers is a crucial element of Second Stage’s mission, which is why we are so excited for another year of the New Voices series,” said the company’s president and artistic director, Carole Rothman, in a statement. “We can’t wait to see what Kate, Jahna, Alex and Britton have created onstage at the Tony Kiser Theater.”
Second Stage is under the artistic direction of Rothman and interim executive director Lisa Post.
