The “Ratatouille” musical is moving from TikTok to the theater community at large.
On Jan. 1, 2021, theatrical production company Seaview will present “Ratatouille: The TikTok Musical” in a ticketed, digital event produced in association with TikTok and TodayTix Presents. The event comes out of a TikTok trend, in which users of the social media platform would write their own songs and create choreography for an imagined musical modeled after the 2007 Disney Pixar film.
The one-time, streaming performance will act as a benefit for the Actors Fund. Tickets will be sold on TodayTix.com.
“Finding new outlets for creative collaboration has never been more imperative than it is right now. We can’t wait to share what these remarkable creators have dreamt up which will now allow them to benefit other artists through the vital work of The Actors Fund,” said Greg Nobile, chief executive of Seaview, the production company behind “Slave Play” and “Sea Wall/A Life.”
Altogether, the collective “Ratatouille” musical videos, which include an opening number, laments, character development songs, set design and performances by Broadway actors, have been seen by more than 200 million users, according to TikTok.
“From @e_jaccs’ original ode to Remy to @shoeboxmusicals’ set designs, seeing the endless creativity of the platform and the wider community rallying around it has inspired and driven a new forum for theater lovers to express themselves, participate, and enjoy the show,” Lizzy Hale, senior manager of content at TikTok US, said in a press release. “In a year where we saw Broadway close, the TikTok community brought musical fans together virtually with one of the most unique trends we have ever seen on platform.”
