James Bierman of Empire Street Productions announced the recoupment of the Broadway production of “Prima Facie.” The mounting’s initial capitalization amount was $4.1 million, according to the producer, and has recouped as of June 18.
The Suzie Miller-penned play began previews at the Golden Theatre on April 11 ahead of an official opening on April 23. Initially scheduled for a limited engagement through June 18, “Prima Facie” was extended by two weeks and will play its final performance on July 2.
For the week ending June 18, “Prima Facie” had its highest-grossing week. It earned $1,107,830, breaking the eight-performance week house record at the Golden Theatre. Edward Albee’s “Three Tall Women” previously held the record at $1,077,919 for the week ending June 17, 2018. In addition, “Prima Facie” has consistently played to audiences filled to 92 percent capacity or greater.
The solo show follows the story of Tessa Ensler, a young barrister climbing the ranks at her firm, particularly making a name for herself as a successful defense attorney in cases of sexual assualt. But when Tessa is attacked, her entire worldview shifts.
Directed by Justin Martin, “Prima Facie” was nominated for four Tony Awards. Emmy Award winner Jodie Comer, who stars as Tessa, took home the production’s sole trophy, winning Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Play.
As with the previous Olivier Award-winning U.K. production, “Prima Facie” on Broadway partnered with several charities that support survivors of sexual assault as well as education about consent.
“Bringing ‘Prima Facie’ to Broadway has been a journey of responsibility and faith that has been met with a response that we only dared to dream of when we set out,” Bierman said in a statement. “That this play could speak louder than the sum of its parts and spark debates looking for change in the U.S. and the U.K. is thrilling. That we could empower over 1,000 people who have been affected by the play’s themes to be part of an artwork on 45th Street is stunning.”
Bierman continued, “I am especially pleased that we were able to recoup on Broadway whilst playing a limited engagement and also holding true to low price and free ticket initiatives to ensure the show could reach audiences from all walks of life.”
“Prima Facie” is produced on Broadway by Empire Street Productions, Elizabeth Armstrong, Broadway Across America, Barbara Broccoli, Caiola Productions, Kristin Caskey, Echo Lake Entertainment, Eilene Davidson Productions, Eleanor Lloyd Productions, Faliro House, FilmNation Entertainment, Dale Franzen, L.T.D.
