Broadway grosses increased and landed back above the $30 million mark last week.
For the week ending June 12, Broadway grossed $31,588,947, up about 7% from the previous week. The 31 shows played to nearly 85% capacity, close to a 4% increase compared to last week.
“Plaza Suite” broke the box office record at the Hudson Theatre for the fourth time, taking in $1,708,386.60. The previous record was set during the week ending April 24 when the show grossed $1,684,195.50.
The limited engagement, featuring husband-wife duo Matthew Broderick and Sarah Jessica Parker, runs at the Hudson for four more weeks through July 10.
“We thank Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick for their unwavering commitment to Plaza Suite during the two-year shutdown and for being a vital part of bringing Broadway back,” producers said in a joint statement.
11 shows played to more than 95% capacity, while only six shows played to less than 70% capacity.
Two shows ended their respective runs: “Take Me Out” closed on June 11, while “How I Learned to Drive” played its final performance on June 12. The latter saw a 79% increase at the box office, grossing $288,289.00, and a 21% increase in attendance.
“Mr. Saturday Night” resumed performances following a planned hiatus. The show grossed $848,030.00 and played to nearly 78% capacity.
Following news that the show will close this fall, “Come From Away” saw a 28% increase in gross and a 20% increase in attendance. The long-running musical grossed $592,763.50 and played to nearly 77% capacity.
“Tina” and “Dear Evan Hansen” followed suit after also posting their closing notices, with the former seeing a 24% jump in both gross and attendance, and the latter seeing a 15% increase in gross and a 13% increase in attendance.
“Beetlejuice” had its best week since mid-April, grossing $1,160,587.50 and playing to 77% capacity.
Meanwhile, “Chicago” saw significant decreases following the departure of Pamela Anderson in the role of Roxie. The show grossed $548,919.39, down 28%, and played to 71% capacity – a 21% decrease compared to last week.
