The Outer Critics Circle (OCC) has announced the schedule for the 73rd Outer Critics Circle Awards. The awards ceremony, which will acknowledge productions that played both on Broadway and Off-Broadway in the 2023-2024 season, will be held on May 23. Nominations will be announced on April 22.
The OCC is an organization of writers who cover the New York theater scene for publications outside New York City. Nominators have until April 19 to see eligible shows.
Unlike other awards bodies like the Tonys, OCC award winners are announced prior to the ceremony. This year’s winners will be announced on May 13.
2024 will mark the OCC’s second year honoring performers in genderless categories. Awards are given in nine categories total: Outstanding Lead Performer in a Broadway Musical, Outstanding Featured Performer in a Broadway Musical, Outstanding Lead Performer in a Broadway Play, Outstanding Featured Performer in a Broadway Play, Outstanding Lead Performer in an Off-Broadway Musical, Outstanding Featured Performer in an Off-Broadway Musical, Outstanding Lead Performer in an Off-Broadway Play, Outstanding Featured Performer in an Off-Broadway Play and Outstanding Solo Performance.
Founded during the 1949-1950 theater season by critic John Gassner, the OCC is currently led by president David Gordon. The OCC board of directors includes Richard Ridge, Joseph Cervelli, Patrick Hoffman, David Roberts, Harry Haun, Cynthia Allen, Dan Rubins, Janice Simpson and Doug Strassler. The OCC awards ceremony is executive produced by Lauren Yarger.
