The West End mounting of the 2019 Best Musical Tony Award winner “Hadestown” will be filmed. The Rachel Chavkin-directed musical will be captured during the evening performance on Feb. 28 and the matinée and evening performances on March 1 at London’s Lyric Theatre.
The live capture will preserve the performances of the five original principals of the Broadway company, including Reeve Carney as Orpheus, André De Shields’ Tony-winning turn as Hermes, Amber Gray as Persephone, Eva Noblezada as Eurydice and Patrick Page as Hades, all of whom will appear in the London production from Feb. 11 through March 9.
The quintet will be joined by Bella Brown, Madeline Charlemagne and Allie Daniel as the Fates as well as Lauren Azania, Tiago Dhondt Bamberger, Waylon Jacobs and Christopher Short as the Workers. Rounding out the company will be swings Lucinda Buckley, Francessca Daniella-Baker, Winny Herbert, Ryesha Higgs and Miriam Nyarko. Casting for the London production is by Jacob Sparrow; original Broadway casting is by Benton Whitley and Duncan Stewart.
The producers have not revealed plans or dates for the release of the film version.
Featuring a Tony-winning score and Tony-nominated book by Anaïs Mitchell, “Hadestown” is a modern adaptation of the Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice. The musical bowed on Broadway on April 17, 2019, and was nominated for 14 Tony Awards, winning eight, including Best Musical. De Shields took home the trophy Best Featured Actor in a Musical, while Gray, Noblezada and Page received nods. The current West End staging opened in February 2024.
Hadestown is produced in the West End by Mara Isaacs, Dale Franzen, Hunter Arnold, Tom Kirdahy and the National Theatre in association with JAS Theatricals.
