“There’s no profit like nonprofit!” was a cherished mantra of the late Shubert Organization chairman Gerald Schoenfeld. Long before his passing in 2008, Schoenfeld understood that the commercial marketplace that is Broadway had become inextricably entwined with the subsidized theater in New York, across the country and in London. You could point to David Merrick, that most market savvy of producers, for leading the way in the mid-Sixties, when he created the David Merrick Arts Foundation to finance his Broadway transfers of such Brit hits as “Inadmissible Evidence” and “Marat/Sade.”
