The full cast has been revealed for the upcoming revival of “Once Upon a Mattress.” The previously announced musical, transferring from a winter 2024 run with City Center Encores!, will begin previews on Jan. 31 and open on Aug. 12 at Broadway’s Hudson Theatre. The production, which features direction by Lear deBessonet and choreography by Lorin Latarro, is scheduled to play a limited run through Nov. 30.
The newly announced ensemble includes Cicily Daniels, Ben Davis, Amanda LaMotte, Sarah Michele Lindsey, Adam Roberts and Richard Riaz Yoder, all of whom appeared in the Encores! mounting. Similarly, Kara Lindsay will reprise her duties at standby for the role of Winnifred.
New to the ensemble are Daniel Beeman, Wendi Bergamini, Taylor Marie Daniel, Sheldon Henry, Oyoyo Joi, Michael Olaribigbe, Jeffrey Schecter and Darius Wright.
They join a previously announced principal cast that includes Sutton Foster, Michael Urie, Brooks Ashmanskas, Daniel Breaker, Will Chase, Nikki Renée Daniels, Ana Gasteyer and David Patrick Kelly. Casting is by Bernad Telsey and Craig Burns of the Telsey Office.
Featuring music by Mary Rodgers and lyrics by Marshall Barer, “Once Upon a Mattress” chronicles Winnifred the Woebegone (played by Foster), the heroine of Hans Christian Anderson’s classic fairy tale, as she attempts to gain approval of the Queen Aggravain (Gasteyer) in hopes of marrying Prince Dauntless the Drab (Urie). This production will feature an Amy Sherman-Palladino-penned adaptation of the musical’s original book by Jay Thompson, Dean Fuller and Barer.
“Once Upon a Mattress” is being produced by Seaview and Creative Partners Productions.
