“Once on This Island” will play its last performance on Jan. 6, after 29 previews and 458 performances.
The musical, which won the 2018 Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical, beating out “My Fair Lady” and “Carousel,” saw its grosses peak the week after the Tony win, but has since been facing a rocky decline. “Once on This Island,” produced by Ken Davenport and Hunter Arnold and directed by Michael Arden, opened at the Circle in the Square Theatre on Dec. 3, 2017.
The musical’s grosses hit their highest peak in the holiday week ended Dec. 31, 2017, reaching $827,890 or 93 percent of their gross potential, but could not keep up the momentum. The Tony Award win provided one week of resurgence, however, the musical’s grosses began to fall again shortly after. Last week “Once on This Island” brought in 58 percent of its gross potential.
“Once on This Island” has a national tour planned for the fall of 2019.
“It has been a great privilege to bring Lynn Ahrens’ and Stephen Flaherty’s ground-breaking show back to Broadway under Michael Arden’s incredible direction. Michael’s brilliant staging, along with the perfect cast and a revolutionary design, are the reasons that the show won the Tony Award and received critical acclaim, and ran as long as the first production in 1990, again delighting audiences for more than 450 performances,” the producers said in the press release.
