Nominations are here for the 2025 Olivier Awards, which honor the past season in theater performed in London’s West End. Nicole Scherzinger and Tom Francis, who won 2024 Olivier Awards for their turns in “Sunset Boulevard” and are currently reprising them on Broadway, made the nominations announcement on March 4.
Director Jordan Fein’s fresh staging of “Fiddler on the Roof” garnered the most nominations with 13, while the new dramas “Giant,” by Mark Rosenblatt, and “The Years,” adapted by Eline Arbo and translated by Stephanie Bain, tied as the most nominated plays, with five each.
Among the other nominees are the West End transfer of the Tony Award-nominated “MJ The Musical,” which received a nod as Mastercard Best New Musical as well as nominations for the Tony-winning choreography of Christopher Wheeldon and the Tony-winning lead performance of Myles Frost. London’s debut staging of Tony nominee “Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812” received six nominations, including in the Mastercard Best New Musical category. “Why Am I So Single?,” a new musical from “SIX” creators Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss, also landed a nod in the Mastercard Best New Musical category, while Pulitzer Prize winner “English,” which recently played Broadway, was nominated for the Olivier as Best New Production in Affiliate Theatre.
Other nominees of note to the Broadway community include Adam Dannheisser, who appeared on the Main Stem as Lazar Wolf in 2015’s “Fiddler on the Roof” and graduated to the lead role of Tevye in the aforementioned London revival to Olivier-nominated effect. Additional Broadway alums with Olivier nods include past Tony nominee Sharon D. Clarke for her turn as Lady Bracknell in “The Importance of Being Earnest,” and Mark Strong for taking on the title role in “Oedipus.”
Tony winner Billy Crudup was Olivier-nominated for reprising his Off-Broadway turn in “Harry Clarke” in London, while two-time Tony winner John Lithgow received an Olivier nod for playing Roald Dahl in the world premiere bio-play “Giant.” Adrien Brody, who just two days ago won an Academy Award for “The Brutalist,” awoke this morning an Olivier nominee for his performance as Nick Yarris in the new play “The Fear of 13.” And in its London transfer, Off-Broadway hit “Titanique” received three Olivier nominations, including one for the Noël Coward Award for Best New Entertainment or Comedy Play.
Established in 1976 and run by the Society of London Theatre, this year marks the 40th since actor Sir Laurence Olivier gave his name to the London awards ceremony in 1984. The 2025 Oliviers will take place on April 6 at the Royal Albert Hall, hosted by three-time Olivier nominee Beverley Knight and Tony winner Billy Porter.
