Scene Partners has announced a new entertainment platform called StagePlay. It is a virtual platform that will allow audiences to experience live theater performances outside of the confines of a physical venue via mixed-reality headsets.
StagePlay allows artists to capture their productions in stereoscopic 3D and distribute them live or on demand. Through the StagePlay app, remote audiences will be able to use mixed-reality headsets (such as Apple Vision Pro and Meta Quest) to enjoy live theater. StagePlay’s use of ultra-high-resolution stereoscopic video and immersive spatial audio aims to mimic the experience of attending theater in person. StagePlay will be able to work with mountings on any scale, from small black box theater to Broadway productions.
“The arrival of StagePlay is a significant milestone for Scene Partners, a game-changer for audiences and a huge leap forward for the live entertainment industry,” said Scene Partners founder Matt Britten in a statement. “For years, creators of live entertainment have sought ways to digitally reach untapped audiences while maintaining the magic of live performance. With StagePlay, live entertainment is made more accessible than ever, offering audiences an immersive experience no matter where they are.”
StagePlay’s first offering will be a “Blue Man Group” performance which was captured live at Off-Broadway’s Astor Place Theatre shortly before the show concluded its three-decade-run in February.
“‘Blue Man Group’ is the perfect first show for this platform — its vibrant artistry has captivated millions of audience members worldwide, and now it will reach even more fans through StagePlay,” Britten, who also founded Broadway Brands, said.
“‘Blue Man Group’ has always been about pushing creative boundaries and exploring new ways to connect with audiences,” added “Blue Man Group” artistic director Matt Ramsey. “Partnering with Scene Partners to bring our show to StagePlay is an exciting evolution of that mission. Now, fans everywhere can experience the humor, music and spectacle of ‘Blue Man Group’ like never before — from anywhere.”
The timeline for the app’s launch will be announced. A StagePlay demo can be requested here.
