A new adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel "The Great Gatsby" is in development, led by Korean producer Chunsoo Shin.
The production, which aims to land on Broadway, will feature a jazz and pop-infused score with music and lyrics by Nathan Tysen and Jason Howland and a book by Kait Kerrigan. Marc Bruni will direct. Mark Shacket of Foresight Theatrical serves as executive producer.
Tysen and Howland recently collaborated on the score for Broadway's "Paradise Square," with Howland writing the music and Tysen co-writing the lyrics. Tysen also wrote lyrics for another musical adaptation of a novel, Broadway's "Tuck Everlasting," as well as lyrics for "Amélie, A New Musical." Howland has more than a dozen Broadway credits to his name as a musical supervisor, music director, producer and conductor. Notably, he wrote the music for "Little Women" and was part of the team that won the Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album for "Beautiful The Carole King Musical." Kerrigan is a playwright, lyricist and book writer whose Off-Broadway credits include "The Mad Ones." On Broadway, Bruni most recently directed "Beautiful The Carole King Musical."
An industry reading of "The Great Gatsby" is set for this month and a regional production is being planned for the 2023"“-2024 season.Set in the 1920s, the story of old money versus nouveau riche centers around Jay Gatsby, who is in pursuit of Daisy Buchanan, the woman he loved in his younger years.
This is one of multiple "Great Gatsby" projects in development. The novel entered the public domain in 2021, which means it is available to be adapted or developed without restriction.
It was announced in April 2021 that Florence Welch, lead singer of Florence and the Machine, had been tapped to write the score for another new musical stage adaptation. Last week it was announced that an immersive adaptation of "The Great Gatsby" will debut in March at The Gatsby Mansion at the Park Central Hotel New York, after a seven-year run in the United Kingdom.
