The 2023-2024 Broadway season will conclude on May 19, encompassing another 52-week cycle of show openings and closings. The 2023-2024 season tallies 39 new productions. Of those new offerings, 21 were musicals, 16 were plays and two were classified as specials. Are any of these figures record-breaking?

Twenty-one new musical productions (including original shows and revivals) is indeed an increase from the 2022-2023 and 2021-2022 seasons, in which 15 and 14 new musicals opened, respectively. Looking at the previous 10 full Broadway seasons (excluding the abbreviated 2019-2020 season and non-existent 2020-2021 season), an average of 14.9 new musicals opened; during the previous 20 full seasons, the average was 14.4. The 2023-2024 season proves above average.
