Theatrical licensor Music Theatre International (MTI) has acquired “The Notebook.” Based on Nicholas Sparks’ 1996 novel (which received a 2004 film adaptation), “The Notebook” features a score by Ingrid Michaelson and a Tony Award-nominated book by Bekah Brunstetter.
“‘The Notebook’ is immediately recognizable as one of the most popular novels and most broadcast films of the past 25 years,” said MTI president and CEO Drew Cohen in a statement. “The musical doesn’t just transfer the story to the stage, but instead the authors have reworked the material to elevate the story for live performance, adding to the humor and the pathos expressed by these wonderful characters. Bekah’s book and Ingrid’s Grammy-nominated score deliver an incredibly moving experience for audiences everywhere.”
“It’s such an honor to join the MTI family and its incredible roster of shows,” added Brunstetter. “I have so much hope and faith that our show will be reaching people for years and years to come.”
“Being a part of the MTI family is a pinch-me moment,” Michaelson said. “I cannot wait to see all the places our beautiful shows goes.”
“The Notebook” tells the love story of Noah and Allie through three generations of their lives. The Michael Greif- and Schele Williams-directed Broadway production opened on March 14, 2024 at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre and closed on Dec. 15. The production received three 2024 Tony nominations. “The Notebook” will embark on a national tour beginning in September.
Licensing availability for “The Notebook” will be announced.
Beyond “The Notebook,” MTI recently acquired “Suffs,” “& Juliet,” “How to Dance in Ohio” and “Kimberly Akimbo,” as well as a high school version of “Once Upon a One More Time.”
