An additional principal cast member has been revealed for the upcoming Broadway transfer of “Once Upon a Mattress.” Michael Urie will play Prince Dauntless, a role he played in the production’s original winter 2024 run at New York City Center Encores! He will appear alongside the previously announced Sutton Foster as Winnifred. The revival, with direction by Lear deBessonet and choreography by Lorin Latarro, will begin previews on July 31 and open on Aug. 12 at the Hudson Theatre. The production is scheduled to play a limited run through Nov. 30.
Urie most recently appeared on Broadway in the 2023 revival of “Spamalot.” Other Main Stem credits include the 2012 revival of “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying,” 2018’s “Torch Song” revival, 2020’s “Grand Horizons” and 2021’s “Chicken & Biscuits.” Off-Broadway, Urie appeared in the solo show “Buyer & Cellar.” On television, he played Marcus St. James on the ABC series “Ugly Betty.
Following the Broadway run, Urie and Foster will appear in the musical’s Los Angeles engagement, set to run from Dec. 10 through Jan. 5, 2025 at Center Theatre Group’s Ahmanson Theatre.
“Once Upon a Mattress is a modern retelling of the classic Hans Christian Anderson fairytale “The Princess and the Pea.” The stage version features music by Mary Rodgers and lyrics by Marshall Barer. For this revival, Amy Sherman-Palladino provides a new adaptation of the original book by Jay Thompson, Dean Fuller and Barer.
Additional casting, by the Telsey Office and Craig Burns, will be announced.
