Michael Luwoye will officially take over the role of Alexander Hamilton on Broadway on Jan. 16, 2018, producer Jeffrey Seller announced Wednesday.
Luwoye is currently playing the role in the national tour of “Hamilton,” now playing Los Angeles, and will take over the Broadway role from Javier Muñoz, who has been with the musical since its early development.
The news was first announced in an interview with Luwoye in the L.A. Times last week.
Muñoz began his role off-Broadway, as alternate to Lin-Manuel Miranda, and continued that role on Broadway, eventually assuming it. His last performance is Sun., Jan. 14, 2018.
Luwoye made his Broadway debut as the Hamilton alternate for Muñoz and later was the first actor to portray Hamilton and Aaron Burr on Broadway, having played Hamilton during a matinee and Burr later that evening.
Before playing Hamilton, Luwoye appeared in the off-Broadway musical “Invisible Thread.”
In addition to the Broadway company, “Hamilton” is running in Chicago and in Los Angeles, through December 2017. The London production opens Dec. 21, 2017 and a new U.S. national tour starts February 2018 in Seattle.
