A developmental reading of “Lucky Us,” a new musical based on Amy Bloom’s 2014 novel, will be presented as an invitation-only reading on Oct. 21. Tony Award nominee Michael Greif will direct.

“Lucky Us” features a book by James Magruder and a score by Grammy Award winner David Foster and Tony nominee AnnMarie Milazzo. Sonny Paladino will provide music supervision for the reading.

The musical centers on teenage half-sisters Eva and Iris. Disappointed by their families, Iris, the hopeful star, and Eva, the sidekick, journey through 1940s America in search of fame and fortune, across the America of Reinvention in a stolen station wagon, to the jazz clubs and golden mansions of Long Island.

Magruder’s Broadway writing credits include a book adaptation for the 2018 Go-Go’s jukebox musical “Head Over Heels” and the book for the 1997 musical “Triumph of Love.” Foster, composer of Broadway’s upcoming “BOOP! The Betty Boop Musical,” has netted 16 Grammys, an Emmy Award and three Oscar nominations for his compositions. Milazzo was Tony-nominated for her orchestrations of 2018’s “Once on This Island” revival; she is also credited with vocal design for “A Beautiful Noise,” “Almost Famous” and “Finding Neverland,” among others.

Greif is the five-time Tony-nominated director of the currently running “Hell’s Kitchen,” as well as “Dear Evan Hansen,” “Next to Normal,” “Grey Gardens” and “Rent.” Additionally, he is a co-director of Broadway’s current musical “The Notebook.” Paladino was musical supervisor of “A Beautiful Noise,” “Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812” and “POTUS.”
