Full casting has been announced for the Broadway premiere of Amy Herzog’s “Mary Jane.” Directed by Anne Kauffman, the previously announced play will start previews on April 2 ahead of an April 23 opening night at Manhattan Theatre Club’s Samuel J. Friedman Theatre. The play is slated for a limited run through June 2.
Joining the previously announced Rachel McAdams are April Matthis in the role of Sherry/Dr. Toros, Susan Pourfar as Brianne/Chaya, Lily Santiago as Amelia/Kat and Brenda Wehle as Ruthie/Tenkei. Casting is by Caparelliotis Casting and Kelly Gillespie.
Matthis’ most recent Broadway appearance was the 2022 revival of “The Piano Lesson.” An Obie Award winner for her performance in the Off-Broadway production of “Tribes,” Pourfar will make her Broadway debut in “Mary Jane.” Featured as Veronica in the NBC series “La Brea,” Santiago has appeared Off-Broadway in “Othello” with Shakespeare in the Park; “Mary Jane” marks her Broadway debut. Wehle has appeared on Broadway in “Pygmalion,” “Come Back, Little Sheba,” “The Big Knife” and “The Crucible.”
The creative team for “Mary Jane” will include Tony Award-nominated scenic designer Lael Jellinek, costume designer Brenda Abbandandolo, four-time Tony-nominated lighting designer Ben Stanton, sound designer Leah Gelp and hair, wig and makeup designer J. Jared Janas. Kate Wilson will serve as vocal coach, and Narda E. Alcorn will be production stage manager.
Herzog’s play follows single mother Mary Jane, whose surrounding community becomes a makeshift family as she raises a chronically ill child.
“Mary Jane” is being produced by Manhattan Theatre Club, under the leadership of artistic director Lynne Meadow and executive director Chris Jennings.
