Casting is now finalized for “Maybe Happy Ending.” Broadway alum Marcus Choi will take on the role of James and others in the previously announced new musical. Michael Arden will direct the production, which has also announced a revised first-preview date of Oct. 16 ahead of a new opening night of Nov. 12 at the Belasco Theatre. The later-than-planned schedule is being attributed to a supply-chain issue related to the production’s scenic design.
“‘Maybe Happy Ending’ uses specially made video projections, which are a critically important part of its scenic design,” said executive producer Allan Williams in a statement. “And unfortunately there has been a delay in production for these custom theatrical goods from the factory which specializes in these models.”
Choi was most recently seen onstage as George Washington in the national touring production of “Hamilton.” Choi’s Broadway résumé includes turns in “Miss Saigon,” “Allegiance,” “Sweet Charity,” “Wicked” and “Flower Drum Song.”
The “Maybe Happy Ending” cast will also include the previously announced Darren Criss as Oliver, Helen J. Shen as Claire and Dez Duron as Gil Brentley. Casting is by Telsey & Co, Craig Burns, CSA.
Featuring a book co-written by Will Aronson and Hue Park, with music by Aronson and lyrics by Park, “Maybe Happy Ending” is set in late 21st century Seoul, as two obsolete helperbots (played by Criss and Chen) discover each other. They develop a surprising connection that challenges what they believe is possible for themselves, relationships and love.
“Maybe Happy Ending” is being produced by Jeffrey Richards, Hunter Arnold, Criss, Rebecca Gold, Spencer Ross, Adam Zotovich, Kayla Greenspan, M/B/P Productions, Fahs Productions, Ken Greiner, Ruth Hendel, Willette and Manny Klausner, Cody Lassen, Mix and Match Productions, Jacob Stuckelman & John Albert Harris and the Nederlander Organization. Allan Williams will serve as executive producer.
