The Broadway mounting of “Stranger Things: The First Shadow” has revealed initial casting. Based on the Netflix series “Stranger Things,” the new play by Kate Trefry will feature Louis McCartney as Henry Creel, a role he is currently playing in the original West End staging. The previously announced production, directed by Stephen Daldry and co-directed by Justin Martin, will begin previews on March 28, 2025 and open on April 22 at the Marquis Theatre.
“Louis is an astonishing actor, and we are unbelievably proud of the incredible life he has breathed into the role of Henry Creel onstage in the West End,” said Daldry and Martin in a joint statement. “From the moment we first met him, we knew he was special, and we are thrilled that Broadway audiences will have the opportunity to witness his extraordinary performance.”
“Stranger Things” will mark McCartney’s inaugural Main Stem appearance. His performance in the London production earned McCartney the 2024 Stage Debut Award for Best Performer in a Play as well as the Critics’ Circle Award for Most Promising Newcomer. He will depart the West End production on Nov. 10. McCartney’s television credits include “Game of Thrones,” “Hope Street” and the upcoming “William of Orangedale.”
Based on an original story by the Duffer Brothers, Jack Thorne and Trefry, “Stranger Things: The First Shadow” serves as a prequel to the events of Netflix’s science fiction series. The production follows the young inhabitants of the fictional town of Hawkins, Indiana, as the arrival of new student Henry Creel turns their world upside down.
Additional casting, by Jim Carnahan, will be announced.
“Stranger Things: The First Shadow” is being produced by Netflix and Sonia Friedman Productions. The Duffer Brothers will serve as creative producers, while 21 Laps Entertainment will serve as associate producer.
