PBS has announced air dates for live captures of two Broadway productions as well as one from London’s West End. All three will be presented as part of PBS’s “Great Performances,” a five-decades-old series which captures all disciplines of the performing arts on film.
First up is the screen premiere of David Henry Hwang’s “Yellow Face.” The previously announced live capture will air on May 16 at 9 p.m. ET. Filmed during the final week of the Leigh Silverman-helmed revival’s limited run on the Main Stem, the production stars Daniel Dae Kim, Kevin Del Aguila, Marinda Anderson, Ryan Eggold, Francis Jue, Greg Keller and Shannon Tyo. The film, which was directed for television by Annette Jolles, is a co-production of WNET and Roundabout Theatre Company, the latter of which produced the Broadway engagement.
The Bob Dylan-scored musical “Girl From the North Country” will premiere on May 23 at 9 p.m. ET. Featuring a Tony Award-nominated book and Tony-nominated direction by Conor McPherson, the 2022 Best Musical Tony Award nominee was filmed at the Belasco Theatre in the interim between its original Broadway run and its spring 2022 return engagement. Tim Van Someren directed the film capture, which features Tony-nominated performances by Mare Winningham and Jeannette Bayardelle, and was produced by Totally Theatre Productions, led by Gavin Kalin.
Finally, “Great Performances” will show a West End mounting of “Kiss Me, Kate” on May 30 at 9 p.m. The musical, which features a score by Cole Porter and book by Bella Spewack and Sam Spewack, was filmed at London’s Barbican Theatre in 2024. Featuring direction by Tony winner Bartlett Sher, “Kiss Me, Kate” stars Adrian Dunbar and Tony winner Stephanie J. Block.
“Great Performances” is produced by the WNET Group. Bill O’Donnell serves as series producer and David Horn is executive producer.
